The lingering effects of the economic collapse have caused an increase in people needing assistance to feed their families here in ElmhurstThe Elmhurst Yorkfield Food Pantry has stepped up to help meet this growing need.  Three days a

week, people line up at the door waiting for them to open.  Unfortunately, while the need for help has recently increased, the amount of donations of food and volunteers are on the decrease and the Elmhurst Yorkfield Food Pantry may soon struggle to keep up.

The people visiting the food pantry weekly have jumped by 20 percent over the past year pushing up the budget to around $4,000 a month.  The Yorkfield Food Pantry operates almost entirely on donations from churches, businesses and personal donations of food and money.  It also receives support from the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

Sadly, one in five children in the county is “food insecure” according to a study, released in August, from the Northern Illinois Food Bank.  That means they don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

The Elmhurst Walk-In Ministry is also seeing an increase in need for things like rent and utility assistance from those people that they are referring to the local food banks for food assistance.  The Elmhurst Walk-In Ministry has also seen a decline of donations while the increase for need is on the rise.  The charity organization has seen a 46 percent drop in donations from individuals and a 30 percent drop in contributions from local churches.

These organizations are looking to add more donors to their lists, especially with the holidays quickly approaching.  We here, at The Gracik Makinney Real Estate Group, truly believe in neighbors helping neighbors.  We encourage you to reach out with us. You can get involved by volunteering your time, donating money or food.  Donations to the Elmhurst Walk-In Ministry can be sent to: Elmhurst Walk-In Ministry 125 W. Church St. Elmhurst, IL 60126.
