Surpassing the Yankees’ 27 World Series championships, Elmhurst’s York Boys Cross Country Team cruised to their 28th Class 3A state title in a field of 25 schools. York finished with 82 points, comfortably ahead of second place O’Fallon with 117 and third place Lyons Township with 125. Since taking over as head coach in 1960, Joe Newton has led the team to collect 44 trophies (28 first, 12 second, and 4 third) never going consecutive years without a trophy.

Senior Scott Milling finished 6th overall with a time of 14:21 and was York’s top finisher for the second year in a row. Junior Kyle Mattes (23rd, 14:47) and senior Alex Mimlitz (24th, 14:48) joined Milling in earning individual all-state honors. Other team members included junior Alex Bashqawi (27th, 14:50), senior Chris May (49th, 15:05), Jack Libert (59th, 15:08), sophomore Matt Plowman (146th, 15:41), senior Zach Herrera, juniors Nathan Mroz and Connor York, sophomore Nathan Dale, and freshman Jon May.

At the awards ceremony on Saturday, the team wore white tuxedos with the all-state athletes carrying white canes to match. Milling was very happy to cap off his York years with a win, “This is what I’ve worked for since I became a freshman at York, and I did it so I’m happy.” Mattes spoke of the importance of the senior leadership this year, and will find himself in a similar position next year. Mimlitz took it a step further recognizing the contributions of all the individuals who have helped him during his years at York, especially during his injury and convalescence time.
