Start Thanksgiving Day off by taking part in the annual Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot, which starts right by our offices in Elmhurst.  It’s a yearly 5K run that benefits several charities in the DuPage County area.  This is the 28th annual Turkey Trot, and it just keeps getting bigger and better each year!  Over the 28 years, the run has raised two million dollars.  All the money stays in the area.

The run was started in 1984 by Dan Gibbons when he wanted to help raise funds for a food drive for the Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation.  There were only 74 runners that first turkey trot and most of them relatives and friends of Dan’s.  That first year they only raised $500 but Dan didn’t realize how he had changed Thanksgiving Day in DuPage County.

The next year, there were about three times the number of runners and even more the year after that.  Not only has the number of runners and walkers increased over time, some years bringing as many as 6,300 runners to the trot, but the number of beneficiaries has grown as well.  The Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation is now defunct, but other charities benefit from the money raised including two Community Pantry Charities as well as Catholic Charities, DuPage PADS, United Community Concerns Association, and People’s Resource Center.

Sponsors of the race are plentiful and make up a diverse group of businesses and organizations.  The volunteers who show up to give their time and expertise, every cold Thanksgiving Morning, are a special group of people who cannot be rewarded adequately in this lifetime.  It’s amazing how so many people who wouldn’t ordinarily socialize with one another can come together to facilitate a community project that will benefit the poor.

Begin this holiday season by participating in, or donating to, the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot.  It’s a fun way to help your community and meet people who care as much as you do.  The Makinney Family will be participating, so join us!
