NASCAR great and Elmhurst native Fred Lorenzen was recently honored with the highest achievement NASCAR offers, a place in the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Now 80 years old, but once known as “Fearless Freddie,” Lorenzen humbly accepted the honor.

While the hall of fame recognition is a great moment in Fearless Freddie’s lifetime, his most proud moments in the sport were actually beating his rival and long time hero, Curtis Turner back in 1961, and winning the Daytona 500 trophy in 1965.

Lorenzen left the sport to start a family in the early 70’s after many achievements, including earning more winnings in a single year in 1963.

Freddie celebrated his final victory at the induction ceremony, where he was saw old friends, met lifelong fans, and revisited his great memories from a successful career.
