For most Elmhurst residents, crime probably isn’t at the top of their worries. And rightly so: A nationwide study ranked Elmhurst in the top 100 safest suburbs in the country.  Not too bad.

The NeighborhoodScout study analyzed the rate of property and violent crime per 1,000 residents. Elmhurst ranked 82nd safest suburb in the nation with a crime index of 66 and 10.88 annual crimes per 1,000 residents. The Crime Index here denotes the percent of communities nationwide that the area is safe than, with a higher index implying a safer area.

The Chicago area has reason to be proud: Seventeen suburbs ranked in the Top 100 nationwide, and in the top ten, two are in our area (Lake in the Hills and Bartlett.)

Elmhurst ranked higher than Northbrook, Carol Stream, Oak Forest, and New Lenox in Illinois suburbs.
