Those of us who live in Elmhurst know what a great place it is. Now we can add to our growing list of amenities the designation of public transportation champions.

In a recent study by DePaul University of the top 25 "transit friendly" communities, Elmhurst was ranked at number five. The study evaluated how attractive the metro-Chicago suburbs are to those who need to regularly use public transportation, looking specifically at things such as services for those without a car, nearby retail outlets, and a community's overall commitment to public transportation.

The study is meant to provide useful information to prospective home buyers, real estate agents, and others who want to see more places reduce the need for individual car travel.

Transit friendliness was measured with a scoring system that used data from the 250 suburbs around Chicago. The 25 finalists also received a series of field visits.

Elmhurst, IL won the title of "Walker's Paradise" by:

  • Scoring a perfect 10 for its accessibility to disabled persons and its station hours
  • Scoring 98 out of 100 points for various amenities near the station

The city of Elmhurst, however, is only one of many communities committed to great public transportation for their citizens. The other top winners were La Grange at number one, Wilmette second, Arlington Heights third, and Glenview fourth.

Every community believes it has something to offer, but few can point to actual awards that prove it.  Elmhurst can. Come and see what living here would be like--and leave your car behind!
