If you’ve ever wanted to live in one of the healthiest parts of the country, congratulations, Elmhurst is your place!

Adobo.com recently crunched the numbers to find the best counties in every state that rank highest for an active lifestyle. And – good news!—DuPage County was rated top in the entire state of Illinois.

Ratings were calculated by gathering the scores for each county in two categories: opportunity and culture. The opportunity score was determined by a county’s access to exercise opportunities (parks and recreational facilities, such as gyms, pools and community centers) as well as access to food (the number of grocery stores and access to healthy food.) The culture score looked at rates of physical inactivity, excessive drinking, smoking, and obesity, with the assumption that healthy people tend to inspire others to live similarly.

DuPage County scored 92.3, one of the highest in the country and THE highest in the state. (Lake County came in second with 90.3 and Cook County was third with 90.2.) The study also noted that DuPage has the lowest rate of smokers not only in Illinois, but also in the country, just 11.6%.

The healthiest state was New Jersey, which scored 86.4, and Fairfax County, Virginia (in suburban Washington D.C.) was dubbed the healthiest county, with a score of 95. Mississippi ranked as the least healthy state. Illinois landed in the middle of the rankings, with a score of 67.8.

DuPage is considered the second healthiest county in the Midwest, bested only to Wabash County, Minnesota near the Mayo Clinic. But DuPage handily beat other top counties in the Midwest, including counties in Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin.

We’re thrilled, but not surprised, that DuPage is rated so highly for access to healthy living. Elmhurst has fitness and yoga boutiques opening up their doors practically every day. And our abundance of parks, recreation areas, biking trails, healthy grocery stores, and nearby nature preserves (to say nothing of our award-winning school system, hospital, and park district) make our city a vibrant place to live.
