Elmhurst Women Will Walk 39 Miles to Fight Breast Cancer

by Thomas Makinney

Two Elmhurst residents are heading to Santa Barbara in September, but it’s not a typical girls getaway.

Gracik-Makinney partner Maria Gracik is teaming up with Ruth Hill and their longtime friend Leslie Hansen to participate in the AVON 39 Walk to End Breast Cancer. The women will spend two days walking 39 miles on Sept. 10 and 11.

Hansen has participated in the walk for the past five years in honor of the women’s mutual friend Mary Burke, who lost her battle to breast cancer in 2011. But this year’s walk has a particular poignancy; in June, Hansen herself was diagnosed with breast cancer.

After Hansen’s diagnosis, Gracik and Hill were compelled to step up and show their support for her, while also raising funds and support for breast cancer research and treatment.

The AVON 39 Walk takes place in seven U.S. cities, including Santa Barbara, New York, Houston, Washington DC, Chicago, Boston, and San Francisco. Santa Barbara’s course winds through the charming downtown and continues along the coast with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez mountains.

Walkers cover 39.3 miles in two days. Since its inception in 2003, the series has raised nearly $590 million and attracted more than 220,000 men and women. Funds raised are awarded to local, regional, and national breast cancer organizations to accelerate breast cancer research, improve access to screening and treatment, and provide education.

We’re immensely proud of Maria and of the hard work and effort of all of these women. If you would like to contribute, please visit http://info.avon39.org/site/TR?px=2688011&pg=personal&fr_id=2485&et=x_6fZ32Cdt_qPDo9SwW-ag&s_tafId=729664.

Gracik/Makinney Named One of Best Real Estate Teams in U.S.

by Thomas Makinney

We’re taking a moment to do a little happy dance. Gracik/Makinney was just named one of the 2016 Best Real Estate Agent Teams in the country by REAL Trends.

The list ranks the most productive agents by state and metropolitan area, and represents the top 1% of all real estate professionals nationwide.

To be included on the list, a team must have closed 75 transaction sides or $30 million in closed sales volume for the prior year. Only closed, residential transactions are considered, not commercial sales or leases/rentals.

"I'd like to thank our clients for making our success possible!" said Tom Makinney. "I think it's the way we guide our clients through the real estate process that keeps them coming back and referring us. Professionalism, knowledge, trust—an easier experience is what we're all about."

Rankings are compiled based on surveys from every national branded network, many state and local associations of Realtors®, multiple listing services, all applicants from past years’ rankings, and the 1,600 largest brokerage firms in the United States. Verification from an independent source is required for all submissions. In addition, REAL Trends senior staff reviews every submission for completeness and accuracy.

This is REAL Trends’ fourth year producing the ranking, which is sponsored by Zillow Group.

Elmhurst Hospital Named One of Best in Illinois

by Thomas Makinney

Good news for our local medical center! U.S. News and World Reports listed Elmhurst Memorial Hospital as one of the best in Illinois in its 2016 rankings report.

Elmhurst came in at #11 in Illinois and #10 in the Chicago area.

The survey used data from nearly 5,000 centers across the country. Scores were based on patient outcome and care-related factors, such as patient safety and nurse staffing.

Elmhurst Hospital received the highest possible rating in seven out of the nine procedures and conditions evaluated, including abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, colon cancer surgery, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, hip replacement, and knee replacement.

It also received highest scores in four of the 16 medical specialties evaluated: gastroenterology and GI surgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, and urology.

The top three hospitals in Illinois include Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Rush University Medical Center, and the University of Chicago Medical Center, all in Chicago. Elmhurst Memorial came in at #11 and sister hospital Edward Hospital came in at #14.

The Mayo Clinic in Minnesota was ranked #1 in the country.

Elmhurst Hospital has 259 beds, and had 14,105 admissions, 3,370 inpatient surgeries, and 5,456 outpatient surgeries last year as well as 48,045 emergency room visits.

With its nationally acclaimed staff and state-of-the-art facilities, Elmhurst Memorial Hospital is another reason why people choose to live in our community. To find out more, call us at (630) 441-5570 or visit us at ww.gmregroup.com.

Newsweek Names York One of the Best High Schools in the U.S.

by Thomas Makinney
Hats off to the Dukes! York High School was recently named one of Newsweek’s Top High Schools 2016.

York was ranked 186 out of 500 schools nationwide and the 12th best high school in Illinois. The last time York made the list was in 2013 when it was ranked 449.

Only six schools in the western suburbs were included on the list: Hinsdale Central (#34), Nequa Valley in Naperville (#154), York (#186), Wheaton North (#204), Waubonsie Valley in Aurora (#260), and Hinsdale South in Darien (#454).

The top-rated school in Illinois was Northside College Preparatory High School in Chicago, which came in at eighth place. Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Va., was named the top school in America for 2016.

Newsweek looked at six measurements and weighted them to achieve a “college readiness index.” Those factors included test scores, college acceptance and enrollment, AP participants, and graduation rates.

York has a student retention rate of 96% and a SAT/ACT composite of 53.2. The school’s average test scores are:  SAT—1819, ACT — 24, and AP —89. Students at York have a graduation rate of 97.2% and a college bound rate of 94.9%.

Of the nation’s 15, 819 public high schools, 6,477 of them met Newsweek’s criteria to be considered in the rankings.

10 fun facts about York’s legendary Coach Joe Newton

by Thomas Makinney

Unless you’ve been out of town or under a rock this past week, you’ve probably heard that this will be Joe Newton's last season as coach of the York high school cross country team.

He will officially be co-head coach for his 61st season at York (his 63rd season of coaching high school athletes) and Charlie Kern will take over as interim head coach before taking the reins of the program after the season.

Newton’s accomplishments are legendary—28 state titles (the most of any Illinois High School in any sport), 12 runner-up finishes, four third-place finishes, for a total of 44 state trophies won under Newton. His teams have won more than 300 conference championships in track and cross country, including an amazing streak of 23 cross country titles in a row (1978-2000.) His cross country and track teams have won more than 2,050 dual meets.

But you might not know some other amazing facts about him:

  • He grew up on Chicago’s South Side and attended Parker High School where he won 12 varsity letters and was named a High School All-American.
  • He has both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Northwestern University.
  • He served two years in the U.S. Army and was the head track coach at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. While there, he coached three Olympic runners.
  • In 1988 he was named assistant manager of the U.S. men’s Olympic track staff in Seoul, South Korea. He was the first high school coach to be made part of the team. His job included running with the marathoners while being escorted by police with machine guns.
  • He once made a goal to run every day. The streak lasted for 21 years and 24 days until a stress fracture in his knee forced him to take a break.
  • He has been inducted into 13 Hall of Fames, including the National High School Hall of Fame, the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and the U.S. Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
  • He retired from coaching track when the team won its first state track championship in 2000.
  • He is the author of four books: The Long Green Line; Motivation - The Name of the Game; Running To the Top of the Mountain; and Coaching Cross Country Successfully.
  • In 2008, a movie was made about him and his team, “The Long Green Line.” It is available on Amazon, YouTube and GooglePlay.
  • Over 150 of Coach Newton’s athletes have gone to college on athletic scholarships worth more than $1,000,000.
  • Although he no longer runs, he still does 100 push ups every day as well as stretching exercises.

His decision to retire is based on both his increasingly limited mobility, and his confidence in Coach Charlie Kern to keep the long green line going.

Long after his students have left York, his mantras remain inscribed in their hearts: “Always do your best” “Be on time” and “It’s nice to be great, but far greater to be nice.”

On Sunday, Nov. 6, there will be a celebration of Coach Newton’s career at York High School, following the cross country state meet that weekend.

Improvements Planned for Elmhurst Train Station

by Thomas Makinney

The Elmhurst train station is preparing for a facelift! Residents are encouraged to offer their opinions in an online survey to help the design team determine what improvements have priority.

The current station was last updated in the 1980s. It serves approximately 2,300 passengers a day, and includes a depot with a ticket office, waiting room, small coffee shop, and restrooms on the inbound side of the tracks. There is also an open-sided shelter on the outbound platform, and a pedestrian underpass linking the incoming and outgoing platforms.

The city has already hired the engineering and construction firm of CDM Smith to handle the architectural design and phase I engineering. The firm plans to identify needed improvements and create a design that maintains the general architectural style of the neighborhood.

In that spirit, the city and CDM Smith held an open house last week and put together a survey seeking input from residents, the business community, and Metra commuters.

The project will include the renovation and/or reconstruction of the platforms and facility, and ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. It will also review access to the train station, car parking, bike parking, pedestrian accessibility, and general infrastructure. There are currently no bus lanes or designated drop-off areas, making congestion sometimes problematic, particularly during rush hours.

Total costs are estimated to run between $8-12 million. The Public Affairs and Safety Committee hopes to have a completed design in place by the end of October, with construction beginning in spring 2018 and finalized by winter 2019.
