Hamburger Heaven: An Elmhurst Landmark

by Thomas Makinney

Hamburger HeavenRight here on North York Street in Elmhurst, you’ll find two Elmhurst landmarks: the office of the Gracik Makinney Group… and Hamburger Heaven! Okay so maybe our office isn’t a landmark, but Hamburger Heaven is! It’s been an Elmhurst institution since their opening in 1948. This year marked the 65th birthday of the local food joint.

Back in May 1948 when Hamburger Heaven first opened, a loaf of bread was a mere 14 cents! Prices have changed, but the famous menu has, for the most part, remained the same. On opening day, a local paper advertised the menu’s debut featuring their double decker hamburger and famous root beer. These specialties are still available on their menu today. Reviews of their food are always positive, with customers raving about the delicious root beer and the large burgers.

Hamburger Heaven has a fairly large selection for a fast food restaurant. Choose from pizza burgers, chicken fingers, or a Reuben on rye. The milkshakes, floats, and malts are a must try! Root beer floats are one of the top-rated choices on sites like Trip Advisor and Yelp.

Locals enjoy Hamburger Heaven for its delicious food and drinks and reasonable prices. There is a tourist draw as well. Tourists love the quaint retro style walk-up ordering system. Root beer fans come from all over Illinois and beyond to taste the draft-style root beer unique to Hamburger Heaven.

To celebrate their 65th birthday, the owners of Hamburger Heaven held a birthday celebration on August 19th. Their entire menu was half price to all customers. A great ‘birthday gift’ for fans of the restaurant!

Hamburger Heaven is located at 281 North York Street, at the intersection of N. York St and North Avenue. They can be contacted by phone at 630-832-3535 or email at info@hamburgerheavenelmhurst.com. The restaurant is open from 10:30AM to 9:00PM.

While you’re in the area grabbing a bite, why not stop by the Gracik Makinney Group? Find out your options for buying or selling in Elmhurst! We’re located just down the road at 190 North York St. You can also reach us by phone at 630-441-5570.

Elmhurst’s Country Star

by Thomas Makinney

If you attended a Taylor Swift concert this past tour, you may have seen Brett Eldredge opening for her. Eldredge is an Elmhurst College alum, who began singing in his preschool days growing up in Paris, Illinois. Throughout his childhood, Eldredge would perform classics such as “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and “The Star-Spangled Banner” at family gatherings. Later, he would sing the National Anthem at major events, including sports games. Recently, he sang the anthem at the Country Music Assocation’s Country Music Festival in Nashville, TN, in front of 60,000 fans.

When Eldredge applied to Elmhurst College, he was already very interested in music and performing. He was drawn to the college by its strong music and music business program. The proximity to Chicago was also beneficial, since Eldredge’s brother was living there. Elmhurst felt like home to the singer; it reminded him of his small town.

While studying at Elmhurst, Eldredge sang in the vocal jazz groups. One of his most influential mentors was his professor, Susan Moninger. She taught him tricks and tips to help make him a more polished singer; tips that he still used today.

Eldredge spent two years at Elmhurst College, when he took the jump to Nashville to start his own musical career. He wanted to establish himself as a country songwriter and performing artist. By 2010, Eldredge had a recording contract with Atlantic Records. His song “Raymond” reached number 23 on the country charts, establishing him as a country artist. His newest single is “Don’t Ya,” a song that’s quickly climbing country music charts.

You can purchase Brett Eldredge’s debut album Bring You Back in stores now. The night of his album release, Eldredge was in New York to headline at Highline Ballroom. The next night, he appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. His TV appearances continued that week. He was also on Today and Live with Michael and Kelly.

Since leaving Elmhurst, Eldredge’s rise to fame has been a wild ride. He had 19 stadium dates with Taylor Swift this year. His current single is still climbing the charts. He’s put in years of effort, and still has much he wants to do. Eldredge’s goal is to one day sell out stadiums and tour overseas. He hopes to keep his enthusiasm for the art and continue putting his full energy into his career.

As Brett Eldredge said, Elmhurst has a fantastic sense of community. If you want to experience this close-knit community for yourself, let the Gracik Makinney Group find you the perfect home in our neighbourhood. Stop by the office today at 190 N. York Rd right here in Elmhurst or call 630-441-5570.

Elmhurst’s Dukes of Distinction

by Thomas Makinney

DiplomaIt’s no secret that Elmhurst has a terrific public school system. Recently, the high school has received top rankings within the state, as well as honors with the Grammy Association. York High School has a history of being a great school; many talented individuals have graduated and gone on to become influential members of our society. This summer, York High School and District 205 have announced their first nominations to their Hall of Fame. This group of eight honorees separate themselves from the rest through their extraordinary accomplishments and dedication to society. Plans to formally honor these individuals will take place this upcoming November.

Ron Guenther graduated from York High School in 1963. Before his recent retirement, he worked as athletic director for the University of Illinois. At the university, Guenther was a key player in increasing endowments from $2 million to an astounding $40 million! He also raised another $300 million for capital improvements at the school. Guenther is also the mastermind behind the model program for producing outstanding student athletes. His achievements at University of Illinois have definitely made a lasting legacy!

From the Class of 1962, Dr. John Baumrucker is a medical doctor who’s done extraordinary volunteer work. He volunteered in Bolivia for 14 years, where he provided medical equipment and supplies totaling over $1 million. He also assisted in the building of schools, clinics and homes there. His projects included a foster home for at-risk boys, which the doctor donated $20,000 of his own money. Currently, the home cares for 21 boys, aged 8 to 18. Dr. Baumrucker also took part in a program that gave medical students the chance to work and gain experience in third world countries. His service and dedication to those less fortunate is truly commendable.

President and CEO of the First Amendment Center in Washington, DC, Ken Paulson, is a York alumni from the Class of 1972. In addition to his CEO duties, Paulson serves as dean and professor at Middle Tennessee State University’s College of Mass Communication. Back in his York High days, Paulson was the student newspaper editor. He used this experience later, as founding editor of USA Today in 1982. He later served as editor-in-chief of the newspaper. Today, he remains a columnist for the paper, writing about First Amendment issues and the news media. A great example of utilizing high school extracurricular activities to gain experience for your future!

Dr. Peter Holbrook, York’s Class of 1962, is a pediatric critical care physician. He developed procedures to treat critically ill children. These procedures have become so successful that there are now 1,800 Critical Care pediatricians trained in these methods, making it the fourth largest pediatric sub-category. He was also behind the Division of Critical Care Medicine at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Dr. Holbrook is a tremendous asset to today’s pediatric care!

John Hagstrom is a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and a graduate of York’s Class of 1983. Hagstrom attended Eastman School of Music for five years. He went on to the United States Marine Band in Washington, DC for six years, three of which he was principal trumpet. He remains dedicated to music performance in Elmhurst, making trips to work with York musicians. You can also catch him performing solos with high school musical groups during concerts.

York High School’s Class of 1946 included Dr. Charles Tilly; a comparative and historical sociologist, social theorist, political sociologist and methodological trendsetter. Dr. Tilly passed away in 2008, but left a legacy as “an intellectual global powerhouse.” He contributed 51 books and over 600 articles to the field of sociology. He also directed over 200 doctoral dissertations. Tilly traveled the world to lecture at various universities. He changed the way the world viewed sociology, and his works led to the development of seven subfields in sociology.

Dr. Claudia Lucchinetti is an international leader in the central nervous system demyelinating disease research. She is an expert in immunopathology, experimental neuropathology, neuroimmunology, and clinical neurology. An alumni from York’s Class of 1982, Dr. Luccinetti now works as a full-time clinician, researcher, and professor of neurology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

Dr. Sidney Carne Wolff was a member of the Class of 1958. Dr. Carne Wolff is the author of two astronomy textbooks and the founding editor of the Astronomy Education Review. She is considered an expert on A-type stars. Dr. Carne Wolff has served as director of the National Optical Astronomy Observatories, which has three national centers. She was fundamental to the establishment of large optical telescopes in the Andes. Her achievements have led to the observation and mapping of the Southern Hemisphere sky.

What fantastic achievements from York alumni! At Gracik Makinney Group, we congratulate each of these Dukes of Elmhurst. York High School is just one of the many reasons to live in our great community. If you’re looking to move into Elmhurst, contact us today at the Gracik Makinney Group. Chicago’s Best in Elmhurst

by Thomas Makinney

Mack's Golden PheasantElmhurst has plenty of great restaurants to choose from. Elmhurst City Center has over fifty delicious restaurants, serving all sorts of delectable cuisines. Among these tasty choices is DuPage County’s oldest continuously family-owned restaurant, Mack’s Golden Pheasant.

Featured on Chicago’s Best TV Western Suburbs edition, Mack’s is an Elmhurst staple, and a terrific option for family meals or a night out. They even have a banquet menu for your next special event. The lodge atmosphere, complete with fireplace and huge windows, is a lovely atmosphere. During the warmer months, you can sit outside on the patio, overlooking the garden and koi ponds.

Mack’s Golden Pheasant is one of those places you may drive by without noticing. If you read online reviews, most everyone says the same thing: not much on the outside but great food inside. Mack’s began sometime in the late 1930s/early 1940 when Frank and Mae Mack purchased a small one-room tavern on W. North Ave. In 1948, they expanded into a full-service restaurant/lounge. The couple chose to build their business in a traditional Czech-Austrian chalet. Unfortunately, this building was destroyed in a fire in 1962. The Macks rebuilt their chalet, slightly larger this time around. This is the building we know and love today, complete with the decorations chosen by Frank and Mae. Today, the restaurant is still maintained by the Mack family.

Mack’s Golden Pheasant has a wide selection on their menu, featuring both Czechoslovakian and American dishes. Favorites include their award-winning duck, wienerschnitzel, and burgers. For the adults, they also have a selection of unique cocktails. On the Chicago’s Best TV special, you can catch Ted Brunson sampling the roasted duck and wienerschnitzel.

The Chicago’s Best episode originally aired a year ago, but you can catch reruns at various times during the week on CLTV. You can see the Golden Pheasant clip on YouTube as well.

As Elmhurst residents, all of us at the Gracik Makinney Group agree – Mack’s Golden Pheasant is definitely worth a try! They have excellent food and a great atmosphere. We recommend the Friday fish fry! Mack’s is just another element that makes Elmhurst a top-choice neighborhood, full of community and culture. The Gracik Makinney Group can help you become part of this vibrant neighborhood. Let’s get started today – contact us at 630-441-5570 or stop by the office at 190 North York Road.
