Elmhurst, IL Is A Little Sweeter These Days

by Thomas Makinney

If you're into either the eating or the history of candy, it's "sweet" to live in Elmhurst right now. The always-great Elmhurst History Museum is running a special exhibit that highlights Chicago's contribution to the world of candy.

Sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Tootsie Roll, My Favorite Toy Store and Fannie May, the exhibit is titled "Sweet Home Chicago: The History of America's Candy Capital",  and it's running now through September 30, 2012. You'll learn how Chicago became important to the candy industry and why it's still home to many big-name candy brands like Tootsie Roll.

If you think you really know one sweet from another, prove it by taking the Candy IQ Quiz to identify candy bars by their ingredients. Or test your candy-wrapping skills with the Twisted Candy Challenge. You'll also browse through interactive displays of artifacts and photos, watch vintage candy commercials, and even get to see the great episode of "I Love Lucy" where the girls try working in a candy factory.

The Elmhurst History Museum is on 120 E. Park Avenue in Elmhurst, and admission is free. You can learn more by going to the museum's website or by calling 630-833-1457.

Current Elmhurst residents know this is just one of many wonderful options that make our community a great place to live. For those who don't yet live here, come see what you're missing!

Sellers: Get Your Home Ready To Sell!

When preparing your home for sale, a number of simple cosmetic changes often provide the biggest return on investment. Here are three tips to upgrade your house without breaking the bank:

  • Bring in the light . The right light creates the right mood. Adding lights to dark rooms can make your home feel warm and inviting. Bring outdoor light inside by opening curtains and installing economical suntubes.
  • Create Space. Many of today's buyers are looking for open rooms. Consider removing unwanted walls to make your home feel more spacious. Buyers will often pay a premium to get a bit of extra room.
  • Replace Flooring. Get rid of that old carpet in the den and replace it with today's newer hardwoods and laminates. You don't have to spend a lot to make a big impression!

These simple tips can help you sell your home and take advantage of today's market. Please contact us if you have any questions about selling your home. We are here to help!

Which suburbs have the most foreclosures? Elmhurst has the lowest.

Foreclosed homes dot Chicago's suburbs, but you are more likely to find them south of the city than on the North Shore.

Among the 100 largest Chicago suburbs, the hardest-hit communities had more than 20 lender-owned homes for every 1,000 mortgagable properties, compared with one or two lender-owned homes in the least-affected towns.

Here are rates for the 10 rockiest communities and the 10 that have been able to swim through the recession. The median household incomes are also listed. The median for the area is $57,104.

Keep Your Elmhurst Open House Safe and Secure

by Thomas Makinney

When potential buyers come to view your Elmhurst home at an open house, you want them to be safe. You also need to ensure, however, that your personal things are protected as well. Here are some tips for each situation.

To start, these three actions can help you avoid liability from someone getting hurt while viewing your Elmhurst property.

  • Check your outside areas. Fix loose or cracked steps leading to the house; if they’re at all slippery, put down rubber mats. Block off any potentially dangerous yard areas and be sure you have childproofed decks and pools.
  • Inside, cover any exposed wires and replace any fixture or wiring that’s unsafe. Move long electrical cords or phone cords out of walking areas, take up slippery throw rugs, and fix or replace any wall-to-wall carpet that’s loose. Handrails should be in place for those visitors who need to use them, and, of course pick up clutter for safety as well as looks.
  • Children often come to an open house, so be sure to lock up medicines, cleaning supplies, and household chemicals. Pets should be contained or removed so they can’t jump up on visitors.

The flip side is ensuring that you and your possessions are also safe during the open house. Sadly, there are unscrupulous people who will come to your Elmhurst open house to steal things. Or they will scope out the house so they can break in and steal from you later. Here's how to reduce your risk.

  • Keep valuables out of sight, preferably in a locked box.
  • Lock up credit cards, checkbooks and money.
  • Keep all expensive medications locked in a cabinet.
  • Remove high-priced clothing from closets.
  • Asking all your guests to sign a register might make a thief think twice about robbing you.
  • Never discuss your personal habits or schedule with visitors.
  • Walk the potential buyers around or at least keep them in sight at all times.
  • Have friends or relatives be on site during the open house, or consider hiring a private security service.

Following these suggestions will make your property safe for prospective buyers as well as for you and your belongings while you're in the process of selling.
