Illinois Historic "Haunted" Mansion Sold at Auction

by Thomas Makinney

haunted.jpg

o-MORE-DOLLS-570.jpgExpense was not the scary part of this historic mansion, listed at auction for a shockingly low starting price of $159,900. The home’s dark history has inspired many ghost hunters and paranormal investigators to both take interest, as well as heed warning, in the property.
Fit for the Addams Family or the Munsters, the three-story 4,960 square foot Victorian home was built in 1882 at 206 N. Broadway Street in Joliet.  Registered in 2002 as a National Historic Place, and known as the Hiram B. Scutt Museum, the foreclosed mansion had originally been a private residence, turned home for girls and women, then again a private residence.

The original owner, who served in the civil war before becoming a wealthy business owner, is among several who have died in the home.  In 2004, a college student was murdered in the home at a party.
When the mansion was purchased by a John Wilkes Booth impersonator in 2007 with the intention of turning the property into a Victorian museum, the new owner died suddenly at the age of 39, just 6 months after purchasing the estate.

Whether the mansion is actually haunted or not has been up for debate amongst believers and non-believers, but the eerie nature of the home’s “Doll Room” and current distressed state can be felt by all who enter. Groups of paranormal investigators believe the spirits of the children who originally lived in the home can be experienced there, with the doll room being of particularly high paranormal activity.

Listing agent Maria Cronin couldn’t believe the amount of interest the home generated, holding several Open Houses which were largely groups or individuals looking to see signs of ghosts.  As for the sale, the final winning bid amount is unknown, though the listing agent did disclose that there was quite a bidding war, and it went for much higher than the auction’s starting price. The identity of the buyer is also unknown, though Cronin assures that the winning bidder has vowed to return the property to its’ original stunning condition.

You've Got Mail!

by Thomas Makinney

In this digital age, it’s becoming increasingly easier to imagine a world without paper mail. However, there are still many reasons to keep your address records updated as soon as you relocate to a new home.
Don’t disappoint Grandma with a  “Return to Sender” stamp on the birthday card she sent! Here is a quick list of accounts that you’ll want to notify of your new address:

Insurance companies: Health, Car & Home owners. Moving from a city to a quiet suburb? Talking with your car insurance provider about your new address could mean a change in your insurance rate!

Utilities: When you move out, make sure to notify your gas and electric companies to close your account. The new home owners do not have the ability to close your account for you. To avoid having their usage & billing in your name, make this change as soon as possible. If it does slip your mind or you wait a few weeks, don’t worry, you can tell them the date that you moved, and they can retroactively send the billing for those dates to the new home owners under their new account.

Credit Cards & Banks:  Keep your financial information private and protected by updating them of your new billing address.

Cable, phone, and internet services: Luckily these are more commonly bundled nowadays to make updating your services easier.

Memberships: If you are an iPass customer, or a gym member, keep them up to date for notifications, billing, and account information.

Schools: In addition to your children’s school, don’t forget to update your alma mater as well.

Doctors & Veterinarians: Update your doctor as well as your pet’s veterinarian. We can sometimes fall behind on our furry friends’ visits for checkups or shots, and most vets send helpful reminders to let you know if your pet is due for anything.

Magazine or periodical subscriptions: Don’t let the next home owners inherit your TIME & Sports Illustrated!

Online Shopping Networks: Amazon, Groupon, eBay… if you shop online- don’t forget to change the shipping address. These accounts save your information and automatically send to the address they have on file unless you change your “default” shipping address. Delete old addresses and get your new address set up on your accounts all at once, and you won’t have to keep changing setting for months after you’ve moved.

And of course, don’t forget relatives!

Buying a home and all that comes with a move can be overwhelming, but we are here to help you through the process each step of the way. If you’re ready to get started, feel free to contact us at www.gmregroup.com or call us at 630.441.5570!

Is Your Home Ready for the Rain?

by Thomas Makinney

With the recent rainy weather that is not uncommon for this time of year, it is important to be proactive about water damage. Since water damage is the biggest threat to your home’s foundation, keeping the structural integrity of your home is worth the very minimal effort and low cost steps that any homeowner can take.

Here are some helpful tips for keeping your home free from flooding and water damage:

Sump Pump Testing
Don’t be the friend who only comes around when you need something, show your sump pump some attention and it will come through when you really need it. Take a few minutes to fill the sump pump pit with water, wait for the rise, and make sure the pump kicks on the water level falls, not unlike a flushing toilet.
If you have a back-up sump pump, this can be tested the same way.

Testing your sump pump is free, and the cost of failing to test it could mean basement flooding and all the damage associated with it.

When a storm hits, you will be glad you did not neglect this feature of your home.

Proper Drainage

Ensure adequate drainage with routine gutter cleaning, making sure your yard has a 6-in yard slope over a 10-ft span from your foundation, and keeping soil moisture levels from getting too dry.

These easy and low cost check-ups could save you from your foundation settling, cracks, and destabilization, which can result in huge repair costs.

Fix Water Leaks
Check for leaks and repair them as soon as they are detected to avoid rot, mildew and mold, or even termites.  Beyond noticeable drips, leaks can be detected by dark spots, toilets that rock, and stains on ceilings or under pipes.  A good roof check like we walked you through in a previous post will also stop potentially developing leaks.

Festival Season is Upon Us!

by Thomas Makinney

It’s finally starting to warm up! With spring making a fashionably late appearance, it’s time to start planning your summer weekends.

If you didn’t get your fill of Mexican fare on Cinco de Mayo this past Monday, Little Village is hosting Festival del Taco, one of the first among many summer street festivals, May 30th to June 1st.  Also that weekend, The Millennium Art Festival at Lake Street & Michigan Avenue kicks off festival season right in the heart of downtown Chicago.  The Millennium Art Festival is renowned as one of the “Top 50 Art and Design Shows” by Sunshine Artist Magazine, and features a wide variety of artwork, crafts, photo booths, and treats.

The first weekend of June, you can watch (or enter) a gut-busting rib-eating contest at Ribfest in Chicago’s North Center neighborhood before heading over to the Belmont-Sheffield Music Festival. Chicago Reader’s “Best of Chicago” winner for Best Festival in both 2012 and 2013, Ribfest features a tasty array of Chicago BBQ, music, and a kid square for family-friendly activities.

Celebrating its 30th Anniversary, the Belmont-Sheffield Music festival features Chicago’s most popular tribute bands, including Wedding Banned, Sixteen Candles, and Kashmir, with proceeds benefiting the Central Lakeview Merchants Association.
Keep the tunes coming, and head to Green Music Fest in Wicker Park June21st & 22nd for an eco-friendly vendor village, free bike parking, music, and craft beer booths. This is a $5 entry donation you will be happy to make.

If the thought of Taste of Chicago crowds make you cringe, you can opt for more low-key neighborhood festivals in July, like Roscoe Village Burger Fest, Summer on Southport, or the Sheffield Garden Walk.  Visit @ properties to see a full list of Chicago’s Top 50 neighborhood festivals!

Elmhurst residents are lucky not only live in a great community, but to also be so close to all that Chicago has to offer. If you’re looking to relocate to Elmhurst, contact the Gracik Makinney Group at 630-441-5570 or visit us online at www.gmregroup.com!
