Self Improvement by Home Improvement

by Thomas Makinney

You’ve heard the expression, “Cluttered house, cluttered mind,” but what other home characteristics are potentially enabling unhealthy habits?

Believe it or not, you don’t have to qualify for the show “Hoarders” to be negatively affected by your home setup. Consider some of these positive improvements for your home to boost a healthier, higher quality lifestyle for you and your loved ones:

Downsize your Refrigerator

It is much easier to cut down on excess junk, limit frozen items full of preservatives, and keep a clean and organized refrigerator when it is smaller in size.  Less room for storage means having to be more selective about your purchases, and that four pound bag of cheddar cheese won’t seem too reasonable anymore. In addition to the many health benefits of your new necessity-only fridge, you’re also reducing your carbon footprint, as well as your electricity bill.

Keep the Dinner Table a Dinner Table

Nowadays it is more often a homework station, a place to pay bills, or write emails. Keep the table set with place settings, and try to reserve it for meals only. Keeping it in a prepared and inviting state will remind you to make family dinners a priority. If it looks more like a table at your favorite restaurant than a workstation, it will be much easier to frequently enjoy quality time over a home-cooked meal together.

Zen-ify your bedroom

Clear surface areas, fewer distractions, more sunlight, and fresh linens. It is easy over time to clutter up the bedroom, have the TV on “just because,” let dust bunnies move in to those hard-to-reach spots, and go too long without changing up your bedding. These little things add up, and while you can’t put your finger on it in the moment, they are inhibiting your peaceful night’s sleep. Keeping these factors in focus and ensuring you’re giving yourself the best environment for a good night’s sleep will greatly improve not just your nights, but your days as well.

Designate a Work-out Space

This can be an entire room in your home, or just a small corner if you’re tight on space.   Even if you prefer to work out in the gym, it is much harder to neglect your fitness routine when a yoga mat, free weights, and fitness DVD’s or magazines are right at your fingertips. Let a workout space inspire and motivate you!

Optimize your Outdoor Space

Balcony or backyard, patio or sprawling acres, make sure you’re making the most of your outdoor space. Particularly after this winter, spending time outside in the fresh air and sunshine is invaluable.  Update your patio furniture, install a hammock, or invest in some outdoor activity equipment and games. Make your outdoor space as inviting as a room in your home, and de-stressing will be as easy as walking out your back door.

If you’re ready to shake things up even more and start fresh with a new home, the Gracik Makinney Real Estate Group is here to help. Visit us on the web at www.gmregroup.com, or give us a call at (630) 441-5570!

The Easter Bunny is on his way to Elmhurst!

by Thomas Makinney

The Easter Bunny is on his way to Elmhurst!

Hop on over to the Prairie Path Gazebo at Spring Road tomorrow at 12:30 for a meet and greet with the Easter Bunny, and the annual egg hunt.

After you have worked up an appetite from all your egg hunting, dig into Francesca’s Amici Easter Brunch from 11am - 2pm on Easter Sunday. If you missed the Bunny on Saturday, you can still say hello and get a photo at the buffet!

Other nearby Easter Brunches are offered at Drury Lane, Ditka’s and The Clubhouse.

Have a Happy Easter, from the Gracik Makinney Group!

Welcome Marie McCall to the Team!

by Thomas Makinney

We are pleased to announce that another Elmhurst area expert has joined our team!

About Marie McCall
“My pledge to you is outstanding service. My reputation equals integrity
at its highest level. My goal is to simplify the real estate process and
educate clients so they can make informed, successful decisions.”

Marie McCall is passionate about real estate!  She prides herself on being a supportive, caring advocate with extensive experience in negotiation. A full-time REALTOR® since 1995, Marie’s husband, Dave originally encouraged her to obtain her license because of her natural love of people and strong desire to help others.  He had firsthand knowledge of her keen listening skills and ability to creatively problem solve.  Marie also utilized her previous  ten years of client service experience with a major automotive manufacturer to understand the critical importance of responsiveness and follow-through.

Marie recently discovered firsthand what it means to relocate when her family packed their bags and sold their home of 27 years.  Selling is so much more than obtaining a buyer, and relocating adds layers of detail and consideration to a move. She quickly realized the important role she plays in helping her clients manage the often daunting real estate process, explaining every step along the way, as well as keeping expectations and emotions balanced.

Loving Where You Live
Marie is an expert on the Elmhurst and Oak Brook communities since she and her husband raised their two children there.  Marie was actively involved in District 205 schools, following her children as they progressed through the school system.  PTA, Junior Achievement, York Boosters, Woodside Estates Homeowner’s Association, and Oak Brook Civic Association are a few organizations to which Marie devoted many volunteer hours.  Ask Marie about her involvement in the “Friends of Elmhurst” organization that has assisted the many less fortunate families in the Back of the Yards inner city neighborhood.   Proud member of Mary Queen of Heaven Parish, Marie is pleased to serve as Eucharistic Minister, Lector, CCW member, and has been a 2nd grade Religious Education teacher for 10 years.

Recognized for Service; Trusted for Results
Marie’s desire to be Best In Class is what drove her to the Gracik Makinney Group–  teamwork that promises first class service and expert market knowledge.   Home values have changed much over the past few years; sometimes overnight! The Gracik Makinney Group combines 32+ years of experience to provide their clients up-to-the-minute market knowledge.

Core Strengths
Realistic market analysis, excellent negotiation skills, honesty, and integrity are most often cited as Marie’s key differentiators. She is a Certified Negotiation Consultant, Accredited Buyer Representative, multi-million dollar producer, and was awarded as one of the top 10% sales associates in 2012 and 2013.

We look forward to working with such a talented and passionate professional!  If you're looking to talk with an Elmhurst real estate professional from our team, please contact as at 630-441-5570 or visit us on the web at gmregroup.com!

So You're Ready for Spring... Is Your Home?

by Thomas Makinney

So you survived this winter and you’re ready for spring, but is your home ready? Now that it’s possible to be outdoors again, it’s time to get your home out of hibernation-mode as well.

Changing the air filters on your air conditioning, and having a professional come take a look and make sure you’re in

good shape now will put you ahead of the game.   You’ll be thankful you checked it out beforehand when it’s pumping crisp and cold on those hot summer days. If you don’t have central air, now is a good time to shop around for updated energy-efficient window units that could save you money and keep you cool all summer long. After the winter, the last thing anyone will want to hear this summer is the complaint of being too hot!

Heavy snow fall and extreme weather like we’ve experienced this winter can do a number on your home’s gutters. Get the ladder out and give them a once-over. Clear any debris, and make sure everything looks strong and secure. If you’re opting to call and have someone else do this work for you, be sure they have insurance. It may be tempting to go with the neighborhood kid, or call that number from a Xerox in the market parking lot, but in the event of an accident it is far more costly than hiring a professional.

Avoid costly repairs by being proactive and conducting a seasonal roof inspection.  Look out for cracked caulk, rust spots, and weathered rubber boots on vent pipes. How are the shingles holding up? Do you see noticeable moss, or lichen build-up? If so, the roof could be decaying underneath. An annual spreading of any inexpensive moss-killer every spring can go a long way! Check the gutters for accumulation of the grit from the tiles.  If your tiles have become too stripped of these, they are not being protected from UV rays and it may be time to replace.  There’s no need to get up there and walk around, many of these can be checked off by standing on a ladder and taking a look from there.

Think your roof maintenance is too demanding? You can always follow Al Johnson’s lead. Beyond Swedish meatballs, Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant & Boutik has something that you won’t find in Ikea.  Known in Door County as “That Place with Goats on the Roof,” the restaurant owner's signature trademark originated when a friend bought Al a goat for his birthday. Someone joked about putting the goat up on the roof, and the rest is history.  Johnson bought the goat some friends, and now people travel from all over the country to see them. You can even see them right from your desk top! The website offers a Goat Cam.

More than just an entertaining attraction, a green roof actually has other benefits! They keep your roof cool in the summer and warm in the winter, and the city of Chicago even offers financial assistance to promote them.

If you’ve been thinking about selling, getting your home spring-ready can easily lead getting your home show-ready. For more tips on getting a show-ready home, contact the Gracik Makinney Real Estate Group at 630.441.5570, or visit us on the web at gmregroup.com!
