Elmhurst Art Museum Classes

by Thomas Makinney

The Elmhurst Art Museum is offering Winter Classes.  Classes begin February 23rd and include kids, teen and adult classes. Classes run from February to June and there are many programs to choose from.

Kids’ classes are a wonderful way to introduce your children to a world of creativity at the Elmhurst Art Museum. The classes are taught by professional teaching artists and the curriculum is geared toward each age group and skill set. Take advantage of this opportunity to allow your child to experience creative learning in a fun and relaxed environment. These classes will provide a fun place to explore creativity and develop skills that will compliment in-school arts instruction.

Messy Business is a great class that is offered to the 18 month to 5 year old (accompanied by an adult) age group. The class features paint splashing among other messy activities. The class runs for 6 weeks and has multiple start days through June 2nd.  Cartooning is a new class being offered to the 8 to 13 year old group and focuses on enhancing drawing skills to develop panel comics. Classes start in March and April and run for 6 weeks.

Teen classes offer an opportunity for creative thinking and construction focused on the pre-teen and teen set. Art classes will provide the same fun and comfortable environment at the museum as offered in the younger kids’ age range. Check out the Stop Motion Animation class or the Beginning Pottery class for your teen. Supplies are included and discounts are offered to Elmhurst residents.

Adult classes are offered to those that want to take their artistic aspirations to the next level or those who want to try a new experience.  The classes offered in this group also include opportunities to drop-in to try out the class.

The Adult Figure Drawing class offers the drop in option and is an opportunity for both adults and AP art students. Paint, sculpture and drawing skills are taught in an effort to increase skill set and comfort with a focus on the complexity of the human figure. This class does include nude and draped models. Some supplies are covered.

The opportunities are varied and classes start on multiple days and times. There are discounts offered for Elmhurst residents and proof of residency will need to be provided at the time of registration. Fees vary based on the class so check out the website for a full list of opportunities and fees.

The Gracik Makinney Group is happy to support our local art museum! What better way to show your support than participating in a fun activity that the whole family can enjoy. If you would like to a make a move to the Elmhurst community, please give us a call at 630-267-7545 or stop by our office at 130 W. Park Ave.

Whole Foods Coming to Elmhurst

by Thomas Makinney

Whole Foods is coming to the Elmhurst community and most residents could not be happier. Whole Foods Market Inc. has confirmed plans to purchase 7 Dominick’s locations in the city and surrounding suburbs.

Dominick’s parent company, Safeway Inc. closed the 72 store chain on December 28th. This left more than 6,000 people out of jobs. Since the stores closed, other competitors have been slowly buying the locations. Joe Caputo & Sons Fruit Market, Tony’s Finer Foods, Pete’s Fresh Market, Roundy’s Supermarkets and Whole Foods have all purchased or stated their intent to purchase the existing stores. This is excellent news for the people that lost their jobs, some of whom have been able to find employment with the stores’ new owners. With the acquisition of the Dominick’s locations, Whole Foods will have 28 stores in the Chicago area by next year.

Founded in 1980, the Austin-based grocer has 360 stores in North America and the U.K. and they claim to be the world’s leader in natural and organic foods. Whole Foods Market is a mission-driven company that seeks to provide natural and organic foods. They maintain a commitment to sustainable agriculture and their stores are stocked with a wide variety of foods. A typical store also has a smoothie and sandwich bar.

The stores, which should open next year, would expand the grocery chain’s reach in Chicago by one third. Whole Foods Market regional president stated that they were very excited about the opportunity to quickly and significantly expand in the greater Chicago area. The 7 new stores include these locations:

  • 1 N. Halsted St. in the West Loop
  • 225 E Grand Ave in Streeterville
  • 959 W. Fullerton Ave in Lincoln Park
  • 6009 N. Broadway Ave in Edgewater
  • 6300 S Robert Kingery Hwy in Willowbrook
  • 2748 Green Bay Road in Evanston
  • 215 S. Route 83 in Elmhurst

Further expansion in the downtown area is good news for Elmhurst. Seeing empty buildings that could be providing a service and jobs to the community is hard and knowing that another grocery store will fill the space is encouraging.

Let our community based team work for you. The Gracik Makinney Group is ready to help you with buying or selling your home. Drop by the office at 130 W. Park Ave here in Elmhurst, or give us a call at 630-441-5570.

Exciting News for Elmhurst and The Gracik Makinney Group

by Thomas Makinney

The largest real estate broker in Chicago, which also happens to be the largest independent real estate firm in Illinois, is coming to Elmhurst. @properties recently announced that they will be making their first major move into the western suburbs and will be leasing an office near the Elmhurst Metra station while they seek a permanent office in the downtown area.

The firm has already started a dedicated recruitment campaign to bring in the best real estate brokers in the area. So far, they have recruited more than a dozen local brokers, including The Gracik Makinney group, which produced over $33 million in residential sales volume during the last 12 months. Recognized as a top producing team, The Gracik Makinney group includes Tom Makinney and Maria Graick. The team brings more than 30 years of combined residential real estate experience to the table. Previously with Coldwell banker, The Graick Makinney Group was recognized as the No. 1 team in Elmhurst and has been ranked among Chicago Agent Magazine’s top 10 agents in DuPage County.

@properties is still on the lookout for an additional 100 agents to work from their Elmhurst office in the next two years. While operating out of the Elmhurst office, @properties plans to service the surrounding communities including Villa Park, Lombard, Oak Brook, Western Springs, Glen Ellyn and Hinsdale. @properties co-founder Wayne Kouf stated that they had been looking to move west for some time and Elmhurst presented the perfect opportunity for them to do so. He sighted demand from clients, who are seeking a better standard of service, and established agents who are looking to increase their business to the next level as the main reasons why Elmhurst fit their needs.  Co-founder Thaddeus Wong said that they would be bringing a dynamic marketing and advertising to Elmhurst and the suburbs that had not seen before.

@properties was established in 2000 and has grown from a small, four person brokerage firm to the largest residential broker in the city of Chicago. The firm expanded to the North Shore in 2009 and became the second largest real estate firm in the area. @properties also has additional offices in Glenview, Libertyville and New Buffalo, Michigan.

All of us here at The Gracik Makinney Real Estate Group are excited about the changes to come. We are happy to make our home here in Elmhurst. Why not make it your home too? Hahn Street Developer Chosen

by Thomas Makinney

In the final days of January, Elmhurst city council members chose a developer for the Hahn Street redevelopment project. The project, thought to have reached the final design, could be a $50 million retail and residential project for Hahn Street, at the north end of the downtown area.

With a vote of 9-4, aldermen chose Morningside Hahn, LLC, of Chicago. Mayor Steve Morley stated that Morningside was the preferred applicant and with the vote in, city staff can begin negotiations to finalize design, construction and the financial details for the redevelopment agreement. One alderman stated that the project wasn’t simply about money, but rather longevity. The goal is to create a building that will be around for 50 or even 100 years. In the end, another alderman stated that they voted for the company that best understood the needs of the community.

Morningside Hahn, LLC proposed a rendering of a six-story version of the design for the project which featured a ground-level plaza and an event pavilion. The plaza was flanked at the north and south by 12,000 square feet of retail spaces. The side of the structure that faces York Street will be six-stories tall, but will step down to three stories fronting Addison Street on the west side of the project. The project includes 162 public parking spaces and 294 private spaces for rental apartments. The plan also establishes 146 one-bedroom apartments and 61 two-bedroom apartments.

A competing proposal was submitted by Lincoln Properties, a Dallas-based office. Lincoln’s project was a proposed five-story building with 216 apartments that offered the city more financial benefit than Morningside’s proposal.

The Hahn Street project site is part of the city’s newest tax increment financing district, called TIF 4, which was set forth about a year ago. The total project costs are estimated at $51.6 million, which includes the land acquisition, site work and construction costs.

At the GracikMakinney Group, we are happy to see our city taking on new developments to improve our community. If you are making a move to the area or considering selling your home, we would be happy to speak to you. Drop by the office at 130 W. Park Ave here in Elmhurst, or give us a call at 630-441-5570.
