Elmhurst School Moves Forward

by Thomas Makinney

The schools here in Elmhurst, whether public, private or parochial, are often cited as some of the best reasons to make this city your home. From national awards to regional recognition, our schools are always looking ahead to provide the best possible education for our students.

Earlier this month, in an effort to better identify itself for both prospective families as well as institutions of higher learning, Immaculate Conception High School announced that it is changing its name to IC Catholic Prep. For the past 75 years, the school has been preparing students for college while maintaining its mission as a Catholic school including a focus on individual service learning each year.

Principal and school president Pamela Levar describes the name change as a way to better identify the school to the community as both a Catholic institution and a college preparatory program. The new name comes with a new tag line as well – the school for independent thinkers. School board member Donald Hoffman said, "We felt we were too much of a secret as to our quality." He added, "It makes it clear we're a religious school and our main focus is to prepare people for college."

IC Catholic Prep draws students from more than 40 communities here in the western suburbs, and has a current enrollment of about 320 students. The school continues to grow however, and the number of incoming freshmen annually exceeds the number of graduating seniors. It draws students from a number of grade schools, including IC’s own grade school and Visitation School here in Elmhurst. Approximately 99% of the graduating class each year goes on to college. Nearly three quarters of all students participate in varsity sports, and 90% are in extracurricular activities. The school also enjoys a relationship with Elmhurst College under which seniors may enroll in college-level courses for credit and at no additional cost.

The wide variety of high-quality educational opportunities available for Elmhurst’s students points to the strong sense of community we enjoy here. Preparing our children for the future is one of our primary goals. Finding the Right Stuff in Elmhurst

by Thomas Makinney

Real estate, like fishing, is surprisingly subtle. What seems like an exercise in baiting the MLS and waiting for nibbles is actually full of small but significant actions that can make buying or selling property in Elmhurst either an exciting adventure, or an endless lesson in patience. Here are some tips for finding the right person to pursue your real estate goals.

Make sure that the person you retain has enough experience. Ask how many transactions he or she has closed in the past twelve months. Remember also that a new agent isn’t necessarily a poor agent – ask who is coaching them along and what professional training they’ve had to date. With the proper guidance and a newcomer’s motivation, this person may just be a good fit for your needs.

The agent you retain must have enough time to devote to your particular situation. He or she should be willing to sit down and answer any questions you have, whether you’re a first-timer or an experienced investor. Good service requires sufficient time to accomplish, so if you feel that your needs are too far down the to-do list, it may mean you should move them to someone else’s list.

A good agent will be very familiar with the location in which your transaction will take place. The particulars of the market in that region, its neighborhoods and amenities should be well known to the person you select to represent you.

Finally, good agents always have good references. They will have lists of happy clients whose needs were fully met. Don’t hesitate to contact people who have recently completed transactions to get their insights into working with a particular agent. Feel free to Google the agent, too, to follow up on their licensure and any disciplinary actions that may have been filed.

Successfully buying and selling property may be complicated, but you shouldn’t find it intimidating. Properly trained real estate professionals, such as all of us here at The Gracik Makinney Group, know the ins and outs of the process and can walk you through it with little difficulty. We’ll help you make the catch of the day because we’re dedicated to providing you the best service possible. Making it Easier to Bike Around Elmhurst

by Thomas Makinney

Bicycle commuting is gaining momentum nationwide, and here in Elmhurst it will soon be easier to get where you need to go by bike. The City Council recently approved a new Bicycle Plan that will include posting bicycle route signs and providing more bike racks throughout the city.

The Elmhurst Bicycle Task Force, chaired by Bob Hoel, worked over several years to develop the plan. According to Hoel, building a parking deck for cars can cost from $25,000 - $30,000 per space, and it may take years of shoppers and commuters using that space to pay for it. By contrast, even on the coldest days of winter, there are 30-40 bicycles parked every day at the train station.

Part of the plan calls for bicycle parking racks to be included in any new building or development, as well as providing more of them near shops and restaurants. “Elmhurst is laid out on a grid, and most streets are residential and quiet,” said Hoel. “People (who want to) should be able to get around the city without a car.”

Bicycle commuting is on the rise nationwide. According to The Washington Post, bicycle commuting in the US has increased more than 60% in the past twenty years. In Europe, commuting by bike is an integral form of transportation, perhaps because their winters tend to be milder, but also because the cities support it, making it a part of the lifestyle. In the Netherlands, for instance, nearly every political party is careful to include promises to enhance the bicycle commuting experience for residents.

In addition to saving money for the city, promoting bicycle commuting could save Elmhurst residents and businesses money, too. The most obvious is gas money and parking cost savings for commuters. According to Business Insider, bicycle commuters save both themselves and their employers some of the money typically spent on healthcare and loss of productivity as bicycle commuters tend to be healthier than car commuters. Uncle Sam even gets in on the act with a $20-per-month tax-free reimbursement for bike-related expenses.

Elmhurst Health Facilities to Merge

by Thomas Makinney

In a recent announcement, Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare and Edward Hospital and Health Services revealed their plans to merge and create one of the larger health systems in Illinois, serving residents in Elmhurst as well as the entire region. The merger will create a three-hospital system, comprised of Edward, Elmhurst Memorial, and Linden Oaks at Edward, employing nearly 7,600, with more than 1,680 physicians on staff.

In the coming months, Edward and Elmhurst Memorial will work to complete normal due diligence reviews, and some parts of the proposal will be subject to both state and federal review. Once all of these processes are completed, the merger could be finalized in mid-2013.

Elmhurst Memorial President and CEO Peter Daniels said, “Edward is a great fit with Elmhurst because of our similar patient-centered and physician-driven cultures, our wide range of services, our shared commitment to providing high quality care and our complementary service areas.”

According to the statement, the merger will have a number of benefits, including:

  • Improved coordination of care and quality in the region as Edward and Elmhurst Memorial medical staff share best practices and clinical protocols.
  • Building upon relationships with affiliated and independent physicians. Edward Medical Group and Elmhurst Memorial’s affiliated practices, including Elmhurst Clinic LLC, will remain of key strategic importance, as will hundreds of independent physicians at both entities, including DuPage Medical Group practitioners. The hospitals also plan to continue partnerships with other major physician groups, such as Advocate Midwest Heart Specialists, which has a large presence at Elmhurst and Edward.
  • Improved access to clinical services. Edward and Elmhurst each have a broad range of services they plan to complement and grow throughout the region.
  • Becoming more efficient. With shrinking reimbursement for hospitals, healthcare reform demands more efficiency to lower healthcare costs.

With an eye both for development as well as the best interests of its residents, Elmhurst is a wonderful place to live. Come join the community - we can help you find the perfect place to call home. All of us here at The Gracik Makinney Real Estate Group are dedicated to providing you with the best service possible. Contact us today at 190 North York Road in Elmhurst or at (630) 567-5902.
