The Dependent Clauses: Young residents on a holiday mission

by Thomas Makinney

The Dependent Clauses: Joe Bonelli, Jake Downey, Anthony Flores, Ashley Harmon, Andrew Hausoul, Jack Jones, Tom Kunst, Matteo Mancuso, Connor McCarthy, Liam McCarthy, Diego Nunez, Mickey Vreeland

The people in Elmhurst are what make our community a home. And an amazing example of that is our very own Dependent Clauses. This group of eighth grade philanthropists formed in 2013 when they were fifth graders at Hawthorne.

Founder Andrew Hausoul wanted to find a way to help struggling members in the community. His parents encouraged him to ask some friends and brainstorm some ideas of ways to help.  A few days later, he and a group of seven friends formed The Dependent Clauses. The name plays on the grammar term they were studying at the time: dependent clauses, which is the part of the sentence that can’t stand alone. That significance as well as the play on the word “clause” made for the perfect name for the group that wanted to focus on helping others during the holidays.

The first year, they wrote letters and went door to door asking for donations, bringing in a whopping $2,400. The boys and their parents were able to purchase clothes, coats, gloves, and toys for three families they discovered through a local church.

The following year, they decided to raise the money on their own rather than just asking. The group, which grew to include 12 members, now rakes leaves, helps neighbors, holds an annual bake sale, and sells cider, cookies, and glow sticks at the Wilder Tree Lighting event.  Family members and community friends also make donations.

The boys are now eighth graders at Sandburg Middle School. So far, they have raised more than $5,000 and have helped eight families and a combined 21 children. This year they are focusing on one family, hoping to brighten their holiday.

If you want more information about this amazing group of boys, visit www.thedependentclauses.org or click on their Facebook page, www.facebook.com/thedependentclauses. If you’re interested in making a donation, please email them at thedependentclauses@gmail.com.

We love bringing awareness to the people and places that make Elmhurst so special. Give us a call anytime or visit our website and let us know what you think or if there is a group or person that we should feature, (630) 441-5570 or www.gmregroup.com

Elmhurst Art Museum explores its “Sense of Space”

by Thomas Makinney

As realtors, we think about the concept of “home” frequently. But it means something different to everyone. What can we learn about how others view home? And why do some places hold special meaning to some people but not others?

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the Elmhurst Art Museum is exploring these questions by honoring its place in the community with the exhibition, “Sense of Place,” which opened last Saturday.

Artists have interpreted the theme by looking at their own sense of space – either personal or public, real or imaginary.  The theme acknowledges Elmhurst’s strong community composed of people who are drawn to the city’s suburban yet urban feel, and those who have lived here for generations.

Two of the artists are from Elmhurst, several are from the Chicago area and others are from New York, Los Angeles, and Switzerland. Some of the works explore the space of the western suburbs or Chicago; others look at very different environments.

Elmhurst artist David Wallace Haskins created “Summer:Winter”, an immersive sensory installation of Wilder Park. He recorded 24 hours of summer sounds at the park, which surrounds the museum, allowing guests to be looking at a winter landscape while hearing summer sounds.

Elmhurst artist Judie Anderson’s work is an illustration of her grandfather’s house. Other works examine how space can be a geographic place or an idea of a place.

This is the museum’s first open call exhibition, and it showcases local, national and international artists. More than 400 applicants applied to be a part of exhibit, but only 39 were chosen in a blind review, meaning judges made their decisions solely on the work that was submitted.

The Elmhurst Art Museum was founded by members of the Elmhurst Artists’ Guild in 1997. They hoped to explore how the study of art, architecture, and design help people from all walks of life see and think differently.

“Sense of Space” runs through Feb. 12, 2017. It is the first of several planned celebrations of the museums 20th anniversary in 2017. For more information, visit www.elmhurstartmuseum.org.

The Elmhurst Art Museum is a gem in our city. We encourage everyone to visit this unique exhibit and celebrate the museum and its presence in our town.

Elmhurst College launches virtual tour of campus

by Thomas Makinney

Have you lived in Elmhurst for years but never made it on to the Elmhurst College campus? Do you live somewhere besides Elmhurst and want to check out the college and our charming downtown?

If so, check out the recently launched Elmhurst College virtual tour. The gorgeous campus is located near downtown yet is secluded enough to be considered slightly off the beaten path.

The tour leads visitors to key sites on campus—including Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel, the Frick Center, the A.C. Buehler Library, Langhorst Stadium—and explains each one’s significance.

Visitors also get glimpses of the scenic arboretum that surrounds the quad. A helpful map overlay allows you to see the layout of campus and get a sense of where the guide is “taking” you.

The virtual tour also includes downtown Elmhurst, Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, and parts of downtown Chicago.

For prospective students, there are links for scheduling a visit and even applying online. Attached videos include students, alumni, and professors talking about honors classes, internships, student athletes, life on campus, and more. Transfer students and military veterans also discuss their experiences.

Elmhurst College partnered with YouVisit LLC to create the virtual tour, which is available in both English and Vietnamese.

U.S. News & World Report recently ranked Elmhurst as one of the best colleges in the Midwest. In addition to its stellar four-year program for undergraduates and 15 graduate programs, the college is also home to the Elmhurst Learning and Success Academy for young adults with developmental disabilities.

We encourage you to take the tour. The college offers many advantages to our residents, including renowned speakers, a Jazz Festival and many concerts and symphonies. It’s just one of the many reasons that Elmhurst is such a vibrant community!
