Elmhurst Struts its Stuff-ing

by Thomas Makinney

The holidays are upon us once again! Here in Elmhurst, Thanksgiving isn’t just a time for family and feasting - it’s also time for the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot! This year will mark the 29th time people will gather for the event on this great holiday to raise money to help wipe out hunger.

The race began in 1984 when Dan Gibbons and his friends heard a radio announcement on WGN radio about people who were going to bed hungry. That first year, 74 participants raced just a little over 2.5 miles, and raised $520 for the second annual Good Neighbor Food Drive. Each year since has seen the race grow, gaining more sponsors and popularity, and to date it has raised over $2.65 million for many organizations in DuPage County such as Catholic Charities, Loaves & Fishes, the West Suburban Community Pantry, the People’s Resource Center, United Community Concerns Association, and DuPage Pads. This year nearly 10,000 people have registered already.

Organizers set up a new course for this year to accommodate and keep safe this large number of participants. This year, runners will start on Park Street at Adell Place and will race to the finish line at Elmhurst College. For a map of the course, click here. Dan Gibbons stated that he is aware many have grown very attached to the old route, but feels that this new location will help the race grow and therefore help more people.

Registration on race day is $35 and will be held at the registration tent in the parking lot just north of Elmhurst Public Library from 6:30 to 8:55 am. Advance online registration is available here until Tuesday, November 26th at 9 pm. All proceeds go to organizations helping people in DuPage.

The Turkey Trot is another shining example of why Elmhurst is such a great community. The GracikMakinney Group is proud to call Elmhurst home, and we’re sure you will be, too. Let us help you find a place here. You can find us at 190 North York Rd here in Elmhurst or give us a call at 630.441.5570.  Let’s get your great holiday season off on the right foot!

Elmhurst and Carl Sandburg

by Thomas Makinney

A new exhibit at the Elmhurst Historical Museum features one of Elmhurst’s famous residents – the Pulitzer Prize winner and “Poet of the People” Carl Sandburg, author, poet, newspaperman, political activist, and movie critic.

This exhibit, open from November 8 through April 20, 2014, presents Sandburg’s life in Elmhurst from approximately 1919 until 1928, one of the most prolific decades of his career. During this time, he wrote the popular Rootabaga Stories for children and the Lincoln biography Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years. He also lectured extensively, wrote numerous poems depicting the difficulties of life at that time, and collected folk songs for the American Songbag.

The exhibit will have rare photos, film clips, touch-screen interactive displays, and many objects on loan from various Sandburg experts, including the curator of the University of Illinois at Urbana, Marten Stromberg and their Rare Books and Manuscript Library, Carl’s daughter Helga, and the National Park Service. Some of the photos on display will be those taken by Sandburg’s brother-in-law, the famous Edward Steichen, regarded as the first modern fashion photographer. Other items on display will include one of Sandburg’s guitars, the green visor he’d wear while working, and one of his typewriters. The museum will also have many exhibit-related programs and events, such as a documentary screening with a question/answer session with the director, a series of the silent films that Sandburg reviewed, lectures, gallery talks with the curator, and free family programs. For full details, click here.

During the decade portrayed, Sandburg lived at 331 S. York Street in Elmhurst, just a few blocks away from the Elmhurst Historical Museum itself, with his wife Paula and their three daughters Margaret, Janet, and Helga. He worked as a newspaperman and film critic for the Chicago Daily News and commuted from the Elmhurst train station.

Head down to the Elmhurst Historical Museum between November 8 and April 20 to check out this amazing exhibit honoring one of the area’s most prestigious writers. The museum is at 120 E. Park Avenue and is open Tuesday to Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call 603-833-1457 or visit www.elmhursthistory.org

Carl Sandburg is another fine example of the many gifted and fascinating people that help make Elmhurst great. Elmhurst in the Top Ten

by Thomas Makinney

It’s long been obvious to those of us who live here that Elmhurst is one of the best places to call home. Now, the folks over at Movoto Real Estate are helping others see this as well by putting us on their list of the top ten cities in Illinois.

Movoto made its selections by judging the amenities, cost of living, crime rates, education systems, employment rates, and home values throughout the state, giving each of the 50 largest cities and townships a score of one to fifty, with one being the best, in each of these categories. Once this was done, Movoto determined the average score, and looked for the ten cities with the lowest, and therefore best, scores.

With this system, Elmhurst earned fifth place on their list. It turns out that our best feature is our culture, with Movoto mentioning in particular the Theatre Historical Society of America and the Elmhurst Art Museum. I’m sure other considerations also played key parts, such as our excellent education system, including Elmhurst College, our crime rate well below the national average, and an average household income of $85,000, 48 percent higher than the Illinois average. Our spot must have been pretty much guaranteed!

Wheaton was just behind Elmhurst, coming in sixth on the list. With an average annual income of over $86,000, it also earned a place in Money magazine’s list of the 25 highest-earning towns in the US. Wheaton has a fantastic education system, too, complete with a graduation rate that’s 13 percent higher than the rest of the state, as well as a top-ranked public library, three college campuses including Wheaton College, and beautiful activity areas such as the DuPage County Fairgrounds and the Town Square Shopping Center.

All of us here at The GracikMakinney Real Estate Group have long known that Elmhurst is a fantastic place to live, and we love sharing it with others. Let us help you find your ideal property here, too!  Drop by the office at 190 North York Rd here in Elmhurst, or give us a call on 630-441-5570.

Elmhurst Holiday Market Tradition Continues

by Thomas Makinney

The holiday season is a time filled with many great traditions. One event that has been added to many people’s list in Elmhurst is the Holiday Market, now in its third year. It’s happening this Friday and Saturday, November 8 and 9, at the Wilder Mansion, 211 South Prospect Avenue in Elmhurst, a historic 1868 venue that amazes with over 9,000 square feet of elegance.

RGL Marketing for the Arts, Inc. and its founder Roz Long have brought together over 50 one-of-a-kind vendors to sell their work amidst this beautiful setting. Come find that perfect gift, whether it’s jewelry, clothing, a hat, a scarf, a handbag, artwork, seasonal ware, or gourmet food, and support the arts and your local artists while you’re at it!

Stop by on Friday from 4 - 9pm, and help the United Community Concerns Association provide food for families in need in the Elmhurst School District 205 by purchasing a $20 ticket that includes a glass of wine and appetizers from Cafe Amano. Get your tickets at the door with cash, check, or credit card. Saturday, the market will be open from 11am - 4pm, and admission is free! Presented by Edward Jones Investments and sponsored by the Elmhurst Park District, and produced by RGL Marketing for the Arts, Inc.

While there, feel free to explore the 17.3 acres of Wilder Park, an historic venue purchased by the Park District in 1921. Besides the impressive Wilder Mansion itself, the park boasts exquisite formal gardens, a picnic area, tennis courts, a conservatory, a recreation building, horseshoe pits, playground equipment, and a veterans memorial, and is home to the Elmhurst Public Library, the Elmhurst Art Museum, and the Lizzadro Museum.

This event is just another example of why Elmhurst is a wonderful place to call home.  It’s a place with an amazing artistic community and great traditions, and is ideal for creating some of your own. The Gracik Makinney Group is ready to help you find your perfect property. Give us a call on 630-441-5570, or stop by the office at 190 North York Road here in Elmhurst.
