Reindeer Route House Walk – A Tour of Beauty

by Thomas Makinney

http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-ash2/174154_100001977979183_3051929_n.jpgThis Friday, December 2, treat yourself to a feast of beauty in Elmhurst by participating in the 35th annual Reindeer Route House Walk.  You will not only enjoy the sights of these magnificently decorated homes, but you will be benefitting the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital Guild, because this event is hosted by the Elmhurst Junior Unit of the guild.

The homes you will tour are decorated by local florists who are, naturally, putting their best foot forward.  Tickets are $25, if you pre-purchase them ($30 on the day of the walk) and you can purchase them at various locations around town, such as Pink Elephant Resale Shop, Wild Rose Floral and Gift Shop at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital’s main campus, Carousel Flowers, Phillip’s Flowers & Gifts, and the Uptown Shop.  Several local restaurants are offering specials, so you can make a day (or night) of it in Elmhurst.

We at Gracik Makinney Group encourage you to come and see the beauty that is in Elmhurst, especially at this festive time of the year.  We are proud to donate to this effort every year and also encourage you to do the same by bringing an unwrapped toy to donate to the pediatric patients of Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare.  You can leave the toys at any of the featured homes on the walk.

One of the featured homes is owned by Alison and Pete Dondlinger, friends of ours.  It is located at 508 Stratford Ave. and is decorated by A Stem Above.  We are very excited about the walk at Gracik Makinney Group.  Our group is a donor to this most worthy of causes, and we hope you enjoy the gorgeous homes that are open for your pleasure.  My wife, Sarah Makinney ,and a group of friends will take the earlier tour between 10 am. and 3 pm, but there is also a later time slot between 6 and 9 pm.

When you see these beautiful homes, you may decide Elmhurst is the place for you.  If you want to see what’s available in the DuPage County area, just call me, Tom Makinney, at our home office, (630) 567-5902, or check out my website,

Bleeding Heart Bakery Comes to Elmhurst

by Thomas Makinney

http://omnibride.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/edit-bleeding-heart-bakery.JPGElmhurst residents who have been traveling to Oak Park to buy goodies from the Bleeding Heart Bakery will be glad to know they can now get them a little closer to home.  That’s right!  At 116 S. York St. you can stop in for your favorite treats.  Anyone who has visited the Oak Park or Chicago location will see that the Elmhurst location is just as imaginative (and earth-friendly) as the others.

This growing chain of bakeries with a “punk rock” twist was founded by Michelle and Vinnie Garcia.  They are dedicated to providing creative, delicious food in an atmosphere that not only promotes a ‘’green” way of life, but also supports local farmers and merchants.  These people “walk the talk” when it comes to the environment.  They use organic, locally provided ingredients, environmentally friendly packaging, and they deliver in a hybrid truck.  They also compost and use “green” friendly cleaning products.

The food you get at Bleeding Heart Bakery is not only organic, it’s delicious.  Who said organic had to be boring?  If you think that, stop in for one of their Deep Fried Donut Sandwiches.  You can also sample some “cake balls,” a sort of twist on the old fashioned doughnut hole. They do fantastic things with bacon, of all things.  People with food sensitivities (gluten, soy, nuts, even sugar) can get foods made especially for their dietary needs.

Wait till you see their array of cakes!  Some of them look like they should go into a museum. They range from the sedate, to the romantic, to the comical, to the draconian, to the spectacular.  Whatever the occasion, they are sure to enhance it with one of their creations.

The Bleeding Heart Bakery is just one of the reasons you need to look into buying a home in the Elmhurst area.  Just call me, Tom Makinney, at our home office, (630) 567-5902, or check out our website.

Happy Thanksgiving, Elmhurst.

Elmhurst’s Turkey Trot Isn’t Just A Dance!

by Thomas Makinney

Start Thanksgiving Day off by taking part in the annual Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot, which starts right by our offices in Elmhurst.  It’s a yearly 5K run that benefits several charities in the DuPage County area.  This is the 28th annual Turkey Trot, and it just keeps getting bigger and better each year!  Over the 28 years, the run has raised two million dollars.  All the money stays in the area.

The run was started in 1984 by Dan Gibbons when he wanted to help raise funds for a food drive for the Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation.  There were only 74 runners that first turkey trot and most of them relatives and friends of Dan’s.  That first year they only raised $500 but Dan didn’t realize how he had changed Thanksgiving Day in DuPage County.

The next year, there were about three times the number of runners and even more the year after that.  Not only has the number of runners and walkers increased over time, some years bringing as many as 6,300 runners to the trot, but the number of beneficiaries has grown as well.  The Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation is now defunct, but other charities benefit from the money raised including two Community Pantry Charities as well as Catholic Charities, DuPage PADS, United Community Concerns Association, and People’s Resource Center.

Sponsors of the race are plentiful and make up a diverse group of businesses and organizations.  The volunteers who show up to give their time and expertise, every cold Thanksgiving Morning, are a special group of people who cannot be rewarded adequately in this lifetime.  It’s amazing how so many people who wouldn’t ordinarily socialize with one another can come together to facilitate a community project that will benefit the poor.

Begin this holiday season by participating in, or donating to, the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot.  It’s a fun way to help your community and meet people who care as much as you do.  The Makinney Family will be participating, so join us!

If you’re looking for property in the DuPage County area, just call me, Tom Makinney, at our home office, (630) 567-5902, or check out my website.

Thanks to Elmhurst’s Finest

by Thomas Makinney

With Veterans Day approaching, America takes a day to officially recognize the service of our countrymen who have made sacrifices to protect us in times of war and peace. At the Gracik-Makinney Real Estate Group, we give a shout out to all who have served, especially the sons and daughters of Elmhurst.

Today, we salute a special daughter of Elmhurst, Sergeant Melinda Makinney.  If the last name is familiar, it is because Melinda is my sister.  Her story is an excellent example of how those who serve us put the course of their lives at our disposal.

Soon after her high school graduation in 2000 from York H.S. she was deeply touched by the events of September 11, 2001 and enlisted in the Marines the following March of 2002. Currently a Sergeant, she is being promoted to Staff Sergeant.  She currently serves as a 0411 Maintenance Management Specialist at Marine Corp Air Station Miramar in California.

Along the way, she finished her Associate of Arts degree from University of Maryland University College, met and married a fellow Marine, and together are raising two sons.  In 10 years, she has lived in New Orleans, Louisiana (right before Katrina), Jacksonville, Florida, Okinawa Japan, Baghdad Iraq, and at Camp Pendleton California.  Both she and her husband Josh are OIF (Operation Iraqi Freedom) veterans, so have adjusted to several deployments. Josh has been in Iraq three times.  When Melinda was called oversees at the same time, she had to leave her son in the hands of the local Makinneys.  She has had a great life, but she has always worked it around the needs of our country and the Marines.

I am so proud of my sister! Thanks, Melinda for all you do. Maria Gracik and Tom Makinney also give thanks to all past and present military who have faithfully served our country.

Need to buy or sell a house?  Visit our website or give us a call at (630) 567-5902 for more information about this great community of Elmhurst.

LOCAL LENDING SOLUTIONS

Low interest rates and stabilizing inventories have offered peace of mind for many real estate investors nationally.

NAR President Ron Phipps sees opportunity for would-be buyers. "All year, the relationship between home prices, mortgage interest rates and family income has been hovering at historic highs, meaning the best housing affordability conditions in a generation," he said. "The biggest factors keeping home sales from a healthy recovery are mortgages being denied to creditworthy buyers, and appraised valuations below the negotiated price. Buyers may be able to find more favorable credit terms with community and small regional banks, and Realtors can often give buyers advice to help them overcome some of the financing obstacles."

Contact us today for a list of qualified, reputable lenders who can help secure financing for your next home purchase or refinance.

SELLING OPPORTUNITIES

Selling your home in today's market requires strategy and execution. Here are three tips to help sellers reduce their time on market:

  • Make it shine. Buyers are attracted to attractive homes. Make your home stand out by mowing the lawn, raking the leaves, washing windows, and cleaning the carpets. These are small things that will make a big difference.
  • Remove clutter. Not only do clean homes show better, but tidy homes offer more to the imagination. One person's treasure is another person's trash. Removing unnecessary clutter will help potential buyers envision their own potential or the home.
  • Pay attention to the market. Work with your agent and price your home to sell. A competitively priced home is the one that sells first, and in this market that counts for a lot.

These simple tips can help you sell your home and take advantage of our today's market. Please contact us if you have any questions about selling your home. We are here to help!
