Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot – Start Making Your Elmhurst Illinois Traditions

by Thomas Makinney

Every year on Thanksgiving Day, Elmhurst IL residents gather at the starting line on a brisk, cool morning to burn off as many calories as they can before they stuff themselves later that night at their respective Thanksgiving meals for the Annual Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot.

Yes, it's usually cold and, yes, it starts promptly at 9 am, but there is nothing more satisfying than completing that run before you start your Holiday eating fest. Also, knowing you are surrounded by thousands of your Elmhurst neighbors in the same situation as you is more than enough encouragement. Not only is it a fun time, but it also benefits the various causes of the Dan Gibbons Turkey Trot. The benefactors in Dupage County include the Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation, DuPage PADS, and the United Community Concerns Association.

Who is Dan Gibbons you ask, and how did this crazy tradition begin?

Dan Gibbons was really just another Elmhurst resident - a volunteer Elmhurst grade school football coach at the time. After being inspired watching the Chicago Anti Hunger Federation's Food Drive on television, he started brainstorming with fellow football coaches of the idea of holding an anti hunger fundraising event in Elmhurst on Thanksgiving Day. Being an athlete, Dan couldn't think of anything more perfect than a Thanksgiving Day run.

So in 1984 on a cold, rain
y Thanksgiving morning, the very first Turkey Trot was born. The 74 runners that participated that day have multiplied over the years to reach as many as 6,000!  We highly recommend that, if you haven't joined the ranks already, that you should make this the year. Here is everything you need to know.

Length: The Turkey Trot is a 5 kilometer (3.1 mile)
Participants: Thousands of runners, joggers, and walkers – some serious athletes, others just for fun
Location:  The race will begin at the Intersection of Vallette and York Rd, Elmhurst, IL 60126. The registration tent, trot wear store, and start are in The Gracik Makinney Rea
l Estate Group Office parking lot.
Time: The gun will fire promptly at 9am, and the race will begin eastbound on Vallette St.
