More Support for Elmhurst Heritage Foundation

by Thomas Makinney

Sometimes once you notice something, you start hearing or reading more and more about it. Recently we blogged about the generous posthumous support that Bob and Ted Kross’ estate gave to the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation. The very next week we learned that ABC 7’s Janet Davies will emcee the Foundation’s gala to be held in November right here in Elmhurst.

Davies was in town on October 15th to tour the Elmhurst Historical Museum and meet with members of the Heritage Foundation. A member of the ABC 7 news team and host of “190 North”, Davies is a native Midwesterner. She graduated from Miami University in Ohio, and began her broadcasting career at WKRC-TV in Cincinnati before taking off to report from locations all over the world. She has also covered several high-profile events such as the Primetime Emmys, the Academy Awards, and fashion’s Prêt-à-Porter in Paris, and has been nominated for, and won, several prestigious broadcasting awards for reporting, writing and producing.

The gala will be held on November 2nd at Drury Lane - Oakbrook Terrace. Tickets are $125 per person or $1250 for a table of ten. The evening will include dinner, an open bar and musical entertainment as well as live and silent auctions. Proceeds from the event will support the creation of the new History of Elmhurst exhibit for the museum. Tickets are available from the event website.

No Doubt About Elmhurst's Housing Recovery

by Thomas Makinney

The National Association of Home Builders recently announced that housing markets in 52 out of approximately 350 metro areas across the country have now returned to or surpassed their pre-recessionary levels of activity. That’s great news for all of us, and here in Elmhurst it means that our housing market is on the right track.

Without going into all of the math, the Leading Markets Index (LMI) assigns scores based upon the number of current permits, prices, and employment data. As a nation, our housing market gets a score of .85 meaning that the nationwide housing market is running at 85% of normal activity. That’s just an average – many areas will be operating at levels that exceed 100% of where they were before the downturn.

NAHB Chairman Rick Judson says that this highlights just how far the housing recovery has come. He points out, however, that it also shows how far we have to go as we face what he calls “some significant headwinds in terms of credit availability, rising cost for lots and labor, and uncertainties regarding Washington policymaking.”

David Crowe, the Chief Economist of the NAHB notes that smaller metro markets are leading the way in the housing recovery. He says that they account for 43 of the top 50 markets in the LMI. Places like Odessa and Midland, Texas both have scores of 2.0 or more meaning they’re at double their pre-recession levels. Other high performers include Casper, WY, Bismarck, ND, and Florence, AL. Overall, the housing markets of 118 of all of the 350 or so metro areas sampled in the current LMI show activity of at least 90% of normal.

At the risk of beating the same drum yet again, now is one of the best times in recent memory to get into the housing market whether you’re a buyer, a seller or an investor. Here at The GracikMakinney Group, we’re perfectly placed to help you take full advantage of this opportunity. Elmhurst Won't Forget Bob and Ted

by Thomas Makinney

Every now and then, a community member makes a lasting impact on his or her friends and neighbors. Here in Elmhurst, we were fortunate to have two such people – brothers Robert and Theodore Kross, Bob and Ted – whose kindness and generosity to Elmhurst lives on after their deaths.

The brothers were members of the greatest generation having served in World War II, returning to become staunch supporters of the community. Ted was especially interested in local history, and had even compiled a book of family trees that chronicled local families and their histories.

Late last month, Bob and Ted’s nieces and nephews came to Elmhurst from their homes across the country to present a check for $70,000 to the Elmhurst Heritage Foundation. The funds come from the brothers’ estate and are earmarked for the foundation’s Visionary Voices campaign, which will go toward the creation of a new History of Elmhurst exhibit set to open at the Historical Museum in the fall of 2014. While specific plans for the exhibit are still in the planning process, the goal is to make it as interactive and engaging as possible.

The brothers were lifelong Elmhurst residents, each of them graduating from York High School and Elmhurst College. They both passed away in 2011, just months apart, both in their nineties. Here at The Gracik Makinney Group, we were happy to be able to help the family by representing them in the sale of Bob and Ted’s home. Their spirit of giving back to the community that nurtured them is part of the fabric that makes Elmhurst the wonderful place it is today.

Bob and Ted, with their generosity and ongoing support of the community, are great examples of why we choose to call Elmhurst home. You can be a part of this great community, too. It’s a fantastic time to buy or sell property, and all of us here at The Gracik Makinney Group are ready to help. Give us a call today at 630-441-5570, or stop by the office at 190 North York Road here in Elmhurst. Let’s make you a part of it.

Elmhurst's Sandburg Middle School Gets National Recognition

by Thomas Makinney

Continuing the trend set by Lincoln Elementary and Bryan Middle Schools last year, Elmhurst’s Sandburg Middle School has been named a National Blue Ribbon School by the US Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan. This is the second time the school has received this honor – it was also recognized in 2007.

All 236 public and 50 private schools recognized this year will be honored at a ceremony to be held next month in Washington DC. Schools are recognized either for their overall excellence or for their progress toward improving student achievement. According to Sec. Duncan, “National Blue Ribbon schools represent examples of educational excellence and their work reflects the belief that every child in America deserves a world-class education.” You can watch a video of Sec. Duncan’s announcement here.

Nominations for the award come from education officials in the individual states as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Department of Defense schools, and the Bureau of Indian Education. A total of 420 schools nationwide may be nominated. Once a school has been nominated, it receives an invitation to apply for the award. This year, Sandburg is one of three high-performing middle schools to be recognized in Illinois. To see a full list of all 2013 National Blue Ribbon Schools, go to the US Department of Education website.

The fact that our schools receive this type of national recognition is not lost on those of us who live here. Elmhurst is a fantastic place to raise a family. We have excellent schools, a forward-thinking community, and access to all of the advantages a big city can offer while living in comfortable, affordable neighborhoods. We really do have the best of both worlds.

How to Stay Sane When Selling Your Elmhurst Home

by Thomas Makinney

Selling a home, whether it’s in Elmhurst or anywhere else on the planet, can be a stressful time. You need to create a sense of possibility for prospective buyers by removing your own stamp from it, allowing buyers to imagine living their lives inside of it. That’s probably the easy part – maintaining that during the viewing process can be more difficult.

Think short-term. You’ll be moving soon, so don’t stock up at the market or warehouse store. Buy only what you’ll need for a week or two – you can always go back for more if need be. Besides, you don’t want to have to pay to move 50 rolls of toilet paper to your new home.

Simplify. Rather than clean two (or three) bathrooms, ask your family to all use just one. If you can negotiate this for a short stint, it will take you much less time to clean your home before a showing. Also, once you’ve done the deep clean on your home in preparation for listing it, consider getting in a cleaning service for a quick clean once a week or so to help keep it that way. It will free up time for you to focus on selling this home, and moving into your new one.

Get away from it all. Let a restaurant clean up the dinner dishes for you. Even take out meals are easy to clear away, and you won’t have lingering cooking smells in your kitchen. If it all gets to be too much, consider a short vacation. Just a couple of nights in a hotel in a neighboring city can help ease the pressure, especially if you can organize it for when there are a number of showings scheduled.

Most buyers won’t expect your home to be pristine, and if it’s a last-minute request for a showing, they’ll have to understand that you do in fact still live there. The best way to make it through the active selling process is to have a real estate professional in your corner. All of us here at The Gracik Makinney Group are ready to put our professional expertise and local knowledge to work for you. Give us a call at 630-441-5570, or stop by the office at 190 North York Street here in Elmhurst.
